So this may or may not be relevant, but Nate, Taako and Lup did some lake diving quite a while ago in which they took some bone and shell fragments. Hope spoke up that they were from an allied species that were also water typed creatures. This doesn't mean much at this moment or at least there's very few connections I could draw, but it's something to consider.
