current plot info!!!
Hello Hadrielites! I thought it might be helpful to pull together the info we have on the current plot to go along with Wash's post, especially for new players who may not know what's going on. Please help me out, because I'm certain I've missed things!
12/26 - At the beginning of the stampede event, Keith and Steak report that they (and Harlan, who was killed) were attacked by "weird tentacled creatures" with armor and thick shells. They were able to escape and make the post, and Steak drew a masterpiece.
12/29 - Hope returns and posts to the network. Nick and Wash take the opportunity to ask about the tentacled creatures, and are later told that 1) they resemble the Host species that used to inhabit Hadriel 2) the gods can communicate with them.
(About a year and a half ago bone and shell fragments were discovered at the bottom of the lake that Hope confirmed were from an "allied" species.)
12/31 - Harlan is resurrected and posts a summary of his encounter to the network (fight run down is here), confirming that they're intelligent creatures with emotions but he wasn't able to communicate with them. They see us as a threat and their beaks are deadly, but he was able to get a picture, which Wash will later send to Name and Hope.
12/31 - Wash asks Name if it recognizes the creatures, it does not on its own but says that the Null have records and that they once inhabited this planet.
1/12 - Wash posts to the network after speaking to Nick about organization. His goal is to get people behind the idea of capturing one of these creatures should they return, so that the gods can try and speak to it, as well as getting the Guard some support for defenses. He at this point believes them to be host species or descendants of the host species that either survived the genocide OR turned their back on the gods to some degree. He is also curious about the bunkers in the ground outside of the city.
1/21 - Peter posts to the network announcing that he was ambushed/attacked by four of the tentacled creatures, and that they did not try to communicate -- just went for the kill immediately. He advises that no one leaves the city or goes anywhere alone, because his spidey sense didn't detect them sneaking up on him. He managed to get a selfie with them as he fled, and got a chunk out of one of their shells.
Additionally, for host-related antics, this summer Ravine stirred up the host souls and Caedra tortured one for information. Not much solid info but worth a look!

Which brings me to the second part of this post! There are four headers in the comments, for ooc organization and inclusiveness. If you can comment on Wash's post, awesome, but if not we're happy to hand wave that to get you involved! We may not be able to do anything with this due to the nature of RNG encounters (I'll ask once I have an idea of who wants in) but it's a CR opportunity at the least.
Plot Sharing: did I miss something vital that should be added to this timeline/does your character have more info? I will edit it in!
City Defense: would your character (whether they're in the Guard or not) join in an organized effort to defend the city from a nautilus attack/do they have any special skills that they think might be useful against these guys?
Creature Containment: does your character have any skills that might lend well to trapping a tentacled thingymabob safely, so that the gods can try to have a chat with it?
Other Plotting: would your character do something else off the wall you think the game at large should know about?
I hope that this is helpful!

he tried two chromatic orbs (which are like balls of elemental energy), but the acid orb missed and the ice orb bounced off the shell. he also tried an illusion spell to distract one of them, but he doesn't know if it had any effect (since i didn't ask the mods and didn't want to interfere with keith and steak's thing). his last spell was sword burst (which makes a ring of blades explode from around his person) after the one monster grabbed him, and that hurt it enough to get it to let go so he could teleport away. i kept the details of the fight kind of vague on purpose but he's given that rundown to a few characters publicly so it's free for everyone to know about. i just don't want folks thinking they're immune/resistant to magic or something since that's not a thing we actually know.

- the nautilus monsters are large dog/small pony sized
- "they float about a centimeter above the ground and propel themselves along it with their tentacles! the tentacle part is easy to observe, the floating part harder since they're so close to the ground. they just leave lil tentacle marks on the ground as they scoot around"

He's not big on being dragged into other people's conflicts (especially when those conflicts involve the gods), but if he suspects innocents will be injured then he'll show up to fight the nautilus back. Any of his friends being threatened is a sure way to draw his ire.

Rey would and totally could help defend the city in case of another attack. She's a walking weapon/powerhouse so like... enough said there.
While she's still technically part of the Guard, she doesn't advertise that openly so she'll be doing it under the pretense of being a badass weapon lady who can spit literal fire.
(Additionally Rey would probably be there to keep Nick safe because she knows he wouldn't just sit pretty while crap is going down.)

Jon has A LOT of skills related to this kind of thing: at root, he's a medieval military commander, and that was also the goal of his education. He is not an engineer or an architect, but he would have a lot of ideas about which structures are more defensible, which are less so, which ones should be shored up, things that could possibly be added to them, and so on, and if someone else is an engineer or a builder, he would be capable of collaborating with them.
His thoughts are not about potential nautilus attacks, they're more about the Null, but they're both the same in the end. If you asked him about city defense (and Nick did, in his inbox), his initial thoughts would be on making the city itself more defensible in the long term, training every willing person to fight and every unwilling person to get to a safe location if they can, etc.
In terms of what he can contribute as a single warrior: he's a very good swordsman with a very sharp quasi-magical sword.

Obviously they're super hard to kill so I don't expect she will actually be able to do this (and obviously I don't actually want her to), but yeah just a heads up??

He mentioned to Michael that he'd be down for convincing these creatures to work with them not against them, but if it's as simple as learning their backstory, he's here to sniff into every corner. He can easily teleport into whatever location people end up visiting eventually whenever we get that far but I'm holding him back from express activity until we have more info from the mods on where the plot itself is going.

"Convince them to work with us instead of against us" is high on Wash's to-do list as well if they are who we think they are, rather than killing them blindly (or just us getting slaughtered) as they come and adding a third front to the conflict.

ALSO harlan can do fighty things and has a spell called forcecage that could trap one of the monsters for up to an hour, which i'm adding here instead of spamming the above posts. other people should get first crack anyhow since i already had my plot moment BUT if we need more backup he's available.
