what's up hadriel, my name's mel and do you know what everyone needs more of in their life? a little bit of lloyd irving from tales of symphonia.

so on the surface lloyd seems like a pretty straight forward jrpg hero, honestly. he's determined, heroic, so earnest that it could almost be considered annoying, and has enough love in his heart to share between two worlds. literally. he's also easily excitable, easily bored, and kind of dim about dating and school stuff (hahahahaa "kind of") but on the other hand he's really good at people. befriending them, understanding them, digging at all of their darkest little nooks and corners until they talk about their most painful things and feel better about them.

and uh, he can have a bit of a temper too sometimes, but that's really just because he cares so strongly about stuff. honest. and his temper never lasts for long.

it's his backstory where things start getting a little bit ????!???? you see, lloyd's dad kratos is actually 4000 years old (lloyd's "dog" noishe is equally as old, but lloyd is just 17, i promise, shhhhhh) and he was forced to kill lloyd's mom when lloyd was three because the exsphere she was growing on her body as part of the angelus project turned her into a huge misshapen monster and shit got real basically. and then kratos fucked off because everyone in this game is shitty at dealing with guilt okay. it's a thing.

lloyd's other dad dirk, a dwarf, raised him as his own for the next 14 years, and lloyd was brought up on dwarven vows (cheesy little feel good things) and, among being trained in dwarven blacksmithing abilities also seemed to pick up a talent for lock picking and bomb defusing for some strange reason. while attending school in the nearby village, lloyd befriended a half-elf and "the chosen" (not zelos, sylvertant's chosen, i did mention the two worlds thing right?) and then the journey for regeneration happened and yeah. lloyd grows wings, two worlds are saved, blah blah blah, you know the drill.

it's important to note here that lloyd is coming from the good ending where truth and love conquered all and lloyd just sort of stared quietly at zelos when he tried to betray everyone and told him he trusted him and zelos came back to help defeat mithos in the end because apparently that's all it takes okay, lloyd staring at you. his earnest face should be considered a deadly weapon.

I think I'm the only person in the world who hasn't played Tales of Symphonia, so this'll be interesting. orz

tales of symphonia is a delight with all sorts of messages about heritage and family and lloyd will stare earnestly at thom until he knows that people care about him and leaving doesn't have to be an option, what do you mean lloyd's a complete stranger, HE STILL CARES.
