October Event: Fear Itself

THE RUNDOWN

On October 21st, characters may start to notice something... odd happening in the city of Hadriel. The first day or two, it starts out as just a feeling. Maybe it seems like someone is watching you, or you catch a formless shape out of the corner of your eye. However, by October 23rd, the feelings will start to morph into full-on hallucinations, and will plague characters with visions of their worst fears.

It happens predominately when your character is alone. From October 23rd-October 25th, your character can turn a corner and come face to face with a dying loved one, a hideous monster, or something else that they fear. The hallucinations can be interacted with, and if you're not careful then they can hurt you.

However, there's hope on the horizon! Because only your character can see their own fears, the presence of someone who can't see your hallucination will make the hallucinations go away. In essence, this means that as long as you stay close to other characters, the hallucinations will not occur. So, stay together, and please, try not to get lost.

Unfortunately, by October 26th, Fear catches wind of this strategy and decides to step up his game. From October 26th-October 31st, he changes the rules and now characters who are in physical proximity with one another will be able to see one another's fears. Now, instead of negating fears, the proximity to other characters will amplify one another's fear.

Fears may combine to create one hellish chimera, or both fears may make an appearance and plague both characters with more strength than they should normally have. Maybe you're your own worst fear and you catch a vision of yourself murdering someone's loved one. All sorts of things are possible!

This also means that your character is never safe. Alone, they face their own terrors; together, they face each other's. They'll have to decide which they would rather endure, assuming that they haven't already been killed by the thing they fear most.

THE DETAILS
The hallucinations can be pretty much anything, but would typically be contained to living things: other humans, animals, supernatural creatures, and things like that will be appearing. However, if your character is afraid of a specific location, then they might hallucinate that location appearing in their bedroom or other places. Only one fear will be shown at a time- preferably their worst fear- but feel free to change it up as the event progresses.

Furthermore, the hallucinations will not actually exist, though your characters will perceive them with a physical weight and form. This means that they can hurt your character- think, sort of like the power of suggestion- but they can't actually destroy buildings or kill characters who can't see them. Because of this, the hallucinations can also disappear and reappear as many times as you like. Kill your fear and have it come back the next time you turn a corner! Wake up from a nightmare and have that nightmare come to life over and over again! There are plenty of ways for your fears to become your own little reality, and after the event is amplified, other characters can see and be subjected to your fears.

Have fun, and do try not to be too afraid... it will only make Fear stronger.

THE OVERVIEW

► October 21st-22nd: Characters experience a vague, creepy feeling.
► October 23rd-25th: Characters will now run into full hallucinations of their fears, which can hurt them if they're not careful. Proximity to other characters alleviates the hallucinations.
► October 26th-31st: The effect of proximity on the event is now reversed: being close to another character now causes both fears to combine in all sorts of fun ways. Being alone still causes characters to experience their own fears as well.
► November 1st: Characters wake up to a new day, fresh with no fears and no more plaguing hallucinations! That's definitely the worst of it, right guys?

Is it cool for the Demon's powers to go haywire during this?

Specifically this one.

Basically movable mannequins everywhere around him, communicators going to static, and baseball bats and liquor bottles just appearing at random and falling from the sky?

Fear isn't specifically messing with character's powers during this event. If the Demon losing his control of his abilities is due to his own IC reaction to fear (or if he's doing it intentionally to scare others, of course), then that would definitely be alright!

Adam is afraid of a lot of things, but absolutely his biggest fear is his father. There'll be a blanket content warning for physical and emotional abuse for probably all his threads for this event, please let me know if you would rather not see any of that! There are plenty of other things he's scared of, like failing his friends or failing in general or his own anger, and I'd be happy to use any of those if you want to thread but don't want to go into those issues.

But the vast majority of what Adam sees will be his father, who is an abusive shitlord whose home Adam left just a couple months before the canon point he's been taken from, so it's a very recent and very real fear. He tends to disassociate hard when faced with his father, too, so expect freezing rather than fighting or running away.

I might play with a few other fears for this event, especially anything that would make an interesting combination in the latter half of things! And I am ALWAYS up for plotting. Adam will definitely not want people to see his fear, even his friends who already know, but being alone will terrify him, so really there's no way to win. Sorry, Adam.

Poor Adam. Can Gansey attempt to punch his father at some point? Either that or monologue at him, since that's actually what Gansey does best.

Yes to both. Yessss. Also we can probably do some good combos with Robert Parrish + dead friends or Adam's own fear of fucking things up + dead friends. You know. Bad stuff.

YO so Adam seems to have a father of the year and Tony's dad was A+ as well. These two haven't met yet, but mind if Tony happens on Adam's hallucinations?

Yes, absolutely! That sounds like it could be a lot of fun, they can both be traumatized and commiserate over awful fathers together. Good times.

I'll probably not top-level with Dorian for this event, but will definitely tag around! Dorian's canonical worst fear is temptation, which is a pretty loose fear, so he'll likely see a decadent, corrupt version of himself. There's plenty of other terrifying things in Thedas, though, so a few fun things like demons or abominations or darkspawn might crop up too. Good times!

Dorian will definitely try to help people out once he figures out what mitigates the fears, and then will have no real idea what to do when things change. But he's pretty brave and will totally jump in to help a bro or sis out if needed, particularly if it can involve witty commentary. Even if he's terrified.

So, Ronan is afraid of a lot of things (crazy, I know, you'd never expect it). Most predominately, he's afraid of something happening to his little brother, so he'll be hallucinating his brother's dead body a lot. If anyone wants to have a fear-combining thread with your character's fear having killed his brother, I'd be 100% game! He may also have a moment or two of fear for his older brother, though those threads will be more fear and confusion than they will be outright screaming-upset fear.

As far as other fears go, he's not quite as afraid of himself as he is afraid that others will discover what goes on in his head. To sum up: lots of PTSD and bird monster personifications of self loathing? So, really horrific bird dinosaur oil-slick gross things will probably also be featured, but he'll actually be pretty well equipped in dealing with them, so for the second half of the event, he may try to hide out and just deal with his shit on his own. Seek him out at your own risk!

I'd be game for some combo fear, especially as Sharon has a dark version of herself that will most definitely be tormenting her. Ronan's little brother would likely be burned alive by Alessa just because that tends to be her mo, but she's also known for her use of barbed wire and messy kills!

Hahahahaaa okay so Gansey is afraid of a lot of things. The three biggest ones are hornets/wasps/bees (which will kill him), his people dying, and his friends hating him for dying. So there will be lots of hornets in his hallucinations, and he will see lots of dead people, mostly the other Ravens, but also possibly Blue, Malory, his sister, and some folks from Box.

All of those threads about other people dying will involve some pretty gristly things, including a suicide attempt, physical abuse, murder, and some other terrible things. Also a lot of spoilers for his series. These things aren't occasional fears, either, they're things he dwells on, so the likelihood of Gansey being almost constantly stalked by some fear or another is pretty high.

WELP the Inquisitor has a lot of fears, which will happen when you live through a lot of Weird Shit. The most immediate and frequent will be nightmarish versions of her companions, just turning against her at first, and then killed as a result of her actions. Maybe they'll be possessed by demons or controlled by Corypheus. There's no end to the shenanigans.

SPEAKING OF the C-word, he's number two on the list. Cecily will see a revived (imagine that) Corypheus who mocks her failed efforts and then eventually full-on haunts her, sending out demons after her and, she thinks, other people.

Finally, she'll have a number of hallucinations about her hand. The anchor will start to flash and hurt on a much more frequent basis to the point of being debilitating. Of course, it isn't actually doing any of that, so she'll likely be panicking over arm with nothing to show for it, but then she'll also see it opening rifts rather than closing them and bringing in demons from the Fade.

So! She'll be trying to help people as much as she can and will be staying close to her team, though the nightmares will have understandably massive and bad effects on her psyche along the way.

I'll probably do a toplevel for both of these boys for this event.

Noah is afraid of basically everything?????? Like he's kind of a scaredy cat overall, but the standards of death of his friends and death of himself are pretty go-to.

As an added bonus for the death of himself that has actually happened, though Noah can't remember it and whatever made him 'Noah' was Elsewhere when he did creepy things as a ghost like reenact his own death. So the event will helpfully show him how it went down. He will definitely be sticking close to his friends for this event. Even when it starts to make things worse.

Thom's biggest fear is canonically 'himself'. Specifically himself 10-20 years ago and his potential to be that asshole again. You need someone to do something terrible when hallucinations start to mingle? Boom, this is your guy. Realistically he did have lines he wouldn't cross ~~probably~~ but he was such a huge bag of dicks that Thom-as-he-is-today has halfway disassociated with his former self and fears him capable of basically anything awful as long as he got paid for it.

Oh, there will also be dead children. FYI.

To be honest Thom is probably going to try to isolate himself even when being around others helps, but he can be tempted out under the possibility of others needing help.

Gansey is going to spend a lot of time holding Noah, I have a feeling. Or clinging to him. Y'know, one of those. Just in case Noah was curious about what his decayed corpse looked like, he can check that out too.

A+ Noah gets to spend this whole month becoming very well acquainted with how he looked after he died and how fucked up his face got.

THEY CLEARLY DIDN'T GET ENOUGH OF THAT WITH PREVIOUS HALLUCINATIONS yeah let's do this.

Clear is generally easily startled since a lot of things surprise him. He's been through a lot in his short-ish life, but at the same time, there's a lot of stuff he hasn't experienced.

His biggest fear is his Master/Lover Aoba dying. He's also scared of breaking again beyond repair.

He has a lot of little insecurities like someone hating him for his face. He's mostly over it now, but he still hides it because he's always been hiding it and he doesn't even know what his own face looks like.

As always, he'll probably be drifting around, so if anyone wants derpbot to stumble upon their own crazy, he can help with a soothing song.

Sharon, like most people, has the generic fear of her loved one dying, or otherwise abandoning her. For her, it will mostly manifest as the brutal death of her father, followed by his corpse following her (think American Werewolf in Paris), and blaming her for his death, and the loss of his wife.

In addition, she'll be stalked by Alessa, the dark version of herself, who will come jam packed with visions of the cave turning into the Otherworld.

I am totally open to combining fears, and letting others experience the various joys that come with her particular brand of torture!

So, Ellie's worst fear is ending up alone, in the form of loved ones dying or leaving her. Soooo, yeah, she's gonna see a lot of dead and retreating Joels around the place, since he's the person left that she truly cares about. (I might take it further and have her believe the entire place is completely desolate until someone approaches her/talks to her. If that's allowed. idk)

There's also David, a cannibalistic killer who kidnapped her and who she ended up murdering. She is afraid of him, but that fear has mostly also transformed into pure anger and rage. Thus if she sees him, she might lash out and attack him. So if anyone wants to see a teenager totally stabbing the shit out of... nothing, look no further.

To a degree she is scared of the infected from her universe. But that fear is nothing compared to the above - especially the 'being left alone' thing. So, those creatures might just come up as reasons Joel died or something.

Most of Arya's worst fears have already happened, but she hasn't gotten a chance to see them up close and personal. This will be her chance! She'll hallucinate both her father and mother's executions. She'll see severed heads, and lots and lots of blood. She'll also see the corpses of her brothers, especially Jon and Robb's. She's got several siblings. Corpses will be following her everywhere!

Apart from that, Arya's afraid of not having a place to sleep at night. She's afraid of being lost, of being alone. Her lays guardians were the priests of the House of Black and White, so she's very afraid of not meeting their demands and being kicked out of the House. She'll think other people in the city are really the priests of the House, and she'll think they're punishing her. She'll hallucinate going blind, and she may hallucinate your character taking her very face off. (It's a rather painful procedure.)

Many of Arya's fears involve body horror, so if that's not something you want to get involved in/see, please let me know!

AHAHAHAHA

Tony is #1 PTSD candidate, especially at his canon point. It's a good time. Hallucinations for him will include lots of really great things including the Chitauri from The Avengers movie destroying the earth. Large creatures like Leviathan and Chitauri soldiers might be running around the city. He's also incredibly afraid of all of his friends/people he cares about dying, and it being all his fault and/or not being able to protect them. So be prepared to see hallucinations of dead Avengers, Pepper, Rhodey and Happy Hogan. And maybe Cap telling him that this is all his fault. ~~RUDE, Steve.~~

He's also not a fan of space and falling to his death through a portal. SO UH. That's something he might be uncomfortable with. Not sure how that would hallucinate though, so we might ignore that.

The arc reactor is still at thing for Tony right now! So what happened to him in Afghanistan is something that probably still bothers him. He might hallucinate having a car-battery attached to his chest, or if things get really bad, he might hallucinate that he's back on the operating table getting an electromagnet shoved in his chest. There also might be water boarding and other forms of torture in his hallucination. Maybe some characters in the city will be members of the Ten Rings. Who knows! That's what this plotting post is for.

At his current point in canon Tony does tend to fall into panic attacks over all this kind of stuff. It gets hard for him to breath and things get kind of fsjdkalfj;lasd for him. It's not something I really wanna overuse though, so I'll be playing the panic attack card sparingly.

I'm down for combining hallucinations with anybody else's and even alleviating hallucinations toward the beginning and p. much anything. Throw suggestions around and we can plot c:

sebastian totally falls through things a lot, just randomly falling through the floor that suddenly becomes the wall, so maybe they can plummet across the city together or something. XD

Oh my god plummet buddies. I have this horrible image of them rocketing through the sky together haha

it's literally what happens in game! sebastian will get thrown- say, through a floor or into a pit -and just fall & fall until he hits the floor, and then the camera shifts to show it's the wall. he falls almost once a chapter, is2g. XD

sebastian has SO MANY THINGS to see & be afraid of!! come and be horrified by the terrors of sebastian's life. tw for lots of body horror! woo!

first & foremost: Ruvik. he's the guy in charge of all the Hellish Nonsense in Sebastian's canon. he's a skinny, burned-to-hell kid in a labcoat with half his brain showing underneath the hood, usually zooming around without warning & reaching out to touch your temple. (probably don't let him do that since... in the game that means death.) here's his wiki page for the in-depth version!

secondly: Laura. Ruvik's sister but turned into a horrible four-armed burned hell creature that screams a LOT, teleports through corpses, runs super fast and is allergic to fire. she's also got a lot of black hair that is always floating around her and super ridiculous nails that can slice your arm straight off. here's her wiki page!

thirdly: The Keeper. he's a dude with a safe for a head, is covered in barbed wire, is dressed like a butcher & carries a bag of heads & his trusty nail-spike hammer thing. he's got a penchant for ripping his own head off & using other safes to teleport to new places. here's his wiki page!

he will also have a bunch of Haunted following him - basically, zombies with a lot of barbed wire, glowing eyes and a penchant for ripping heads open to eat your brains! he may also have hallucinations of himself turning into haunted!Sebastian, but as long as someone's around to snap him out of it he'll be okay. he's ALSO afraid of fire & his daughter died in one, so get ready to get HOT if you're near Sebastian for a while, & hear crying and screaming towards the end of the event. fun!

he's got a whole LOT of horrifying creatures that could show up at any time, so if you want to play RUN VERY FAST THE OTHER WAY with Sebastian, feel free to suggest a creature! the three above are going to be the most common, but I'm open to anything =w= I'll probably make a top level in a day or so!

oh Hell Yeah. the Haunted getting weapons is something that actually happens in game so they could fuse with the Chitauri in a hellish barbed wire/alien sharpshooting combo. maybe Laura's jaw can unhinge and become huge like the transport ship/whale thing does.

this massive, horrifying thing or even Ruvik's final form could also be mixed with a Leviathan since they're so huge. like, splits down the middle & tries to swallow them whole or something equally Completely Awful. >:D

Can we mix the Haunted with the Demon's mannequins? Because you know.. that won't be horrifying.

WE TOTALLY CAN & Sebastian has mannequins in his canon too, so we can always throw a few of those in bc why not, honestly.

Welp. He's never felt fear before so this is going to be an extra nightmare for him. ~~Help me torture him pls~~.

He's actually going to start out thinking this is AWESOME. He's all about them vague creepy feelings, especially when he's causing them.

He's not going to like when it turns around on him and suddenly he's being stalked. Expect property damage because he's going to start hallucinating that there's Oro Sonic Emitters all over the place (they're speakers the Oro use that target all the metal shit in people (and him) that cause intense pain and could knock him out.). Ethan will be dead. His mannequins will turn on him. He won't be able to make alcohol. The Oro will be coming after him to dismantle him.

I'm up for anything! But he will be really dangerous come the last part of the event when he'll get super violent and start telekinetically throwing things everywhere.
