Endgame OOC: Null Attack

THE BUILDUP
It's time. You all knew it was coming - the inevitable Null attack. There's no more running. This is your last stand.

It begins slowly. The Null have been scouting for the location of Hadriel since the very beginning, but constant moves have kept them off your trail. On May 29th, that's all over when a contingent of Null scouts flies above the city. High in the sky, they are too far away to easily hit, and they only stay long enough to transmit the location of the city. They are, after all, merely a scouting force.

Knowing that this is the end, Hope will make a network post on May 30th. After discussion with the other gods and with some of the residents of the city, he has a few options for people to vote on - your final IC vote of the game. This will determine the ultimate form of the gods' response to the Null, and the decision is in your hands. The poll will be open until June 5th, and we'll have a followup OOC post explain the effects of your decision.

Shortly afterward, the first wave of Null attackers arrives. On May 31st, the battle begins. These initial forces are merely the advance force, the closest Null troops available, and you did all choose this place to move the city because there wasn't much Null presence. So the attack starts off slow, particularly because Confusion and Tranquility are protecting the city from air assault, making it unable for Null ships or troops to land within the city.

The Null troops land in the jungle surrounding the city instead, and approach through the trees. At this point, anything outside of the city becomes extremely dangerous. The Null begin to set up encampments and weapons, surrounding the city, with regular forays into it. These are often turned back by Confusion's powers, but a few will make it through. Throughout this phase of the attack, the most dangerous place is outside the city, but every day or so 3-5 Null will slip through the defenses and wreak havoc within the city. Kill them quickly if you can - their goal is information gathering and destruction of whatever defenses they can find, weakening the city for the main attack.

This is the last chance you have to create defenses, formulate plans, and find other ways to fight back against the Null. Many of you have already been working on projects, which can be seen here (and a couple here). There are bunkers in Delight's housing for noncombatants, and in addition to that some folks have managed to tweak the Door into providing a protected area as well, which will keep Null out by means of an insanity field. One of our residents is working on weaponizing the environment and preparing for guerilla warfare, some people have convinced Fear to take them to attack Null outposts, and a number of folks are working on permanent Null solutions, like transport via the Door or a virus (these will be some of the possible solutions voted on in Hope's post). You've all been doing some amazing stuff. Please let us know here if there is anything we've missed, or anything new you'd like to do!

THE ATTACK
On June 6th, the city defenses fall. One of the Null troops that managed to break past Confusion's labyrinth of protection delivers a bomb specifically created to damage or kill gods to her temple. Its explosion, while not quite killing her, does injure her severely. A wave of intense confusion blasts through the city at the moment the bomb is detonated - for up to fifteen minutes, your characters might not know where they are, what they're doing, or even who they are. Luckily, the same thing happens to the Null.

After this, the Null can enter the city. They begin their attack in earnest, using their bases set up outside the city as places to attack from. While they can be beaten back by the remaining gods and your efforts for a few days, on June 11th a fleet of Null ships appears above the city. Ominous and frightening, their only saving grace is that the Null have never engaged in ship-to-ship combat, and thus never needed to develop missiles. They cannot bombard the city - but they can send near-endless waves of Null down to invade.

From then on, they will attack both from the edges of the city and from above. There will be brief breaks now and then, as the Null marshal their forces and repair, but their ultimate goal is complete destruction of the city and all its inhabitants, and they won't stop until this is accomplished. There are very few safe places, except for what you yourselves fortify. The gods' temples are also technically safe, as the gods will do what they can to protect them, but since they're also targets for the Null, that safety is definitely not guaranteed.

On June 15th, another fleet of Null ships appears above the city, with twice as many ships. As the city is truly beginning to be overrun, the decision chosen in our IC poll will be implemented. What the effects of that are will depend on what you choose, but one way or another, the invasion will be over. Let's hope you survived it. Let's hope we all did. The effects of this attack on both the city and the gods, in addition to the Null, is entirely up to you.

THE NULL
Those of you who were around during our previous Null attack know what's coming. We won't rehash all the info in that post - however, if you want to reread the 'Null' section, that'll give you a great idea of the majority of the threat you'll be facing. They can still shapeshift, they still have laser cutters, and they're still centrally linked, sharing information within milliseconds. They'll have fewer of the crowd-killing weapons this time, all of which will only be deployed in the second part of the invasion, once they're in the city. But don't get too complacent. While you've been thinking about how to fight the Null, they've been thinking about how to fight you.

Having fought only the gods and their hosts in the past, their first attack introduced the Null to a variety of new threats. Namely: magic. While the gods have magic of a sort, it isn't the fireball-throwing, spell-casting badassery that you all brought to the table. Being ever adaptable, and knowing they will again face this threat, the Null have developed new units specifically designed to combat magic-users.

These units are much rarer than the regular Null, but much stronger. They have been outfitted to be far more resistant to energy blasts, ice magic, and particularly fire, with fireproof exoskeletons capable of withstanding extremely high temperatures. While they do still have laser cutters as their main weapon, they have also developed smaller, more directed versions of their crowd-killers. These can be used on one person at a time to, essentially, sonic blast the brain of their attacker. They will immediately cause confusion and total loss of concentration, rendering whoever they're directed at unable to use their abilities - or do much of anything - while the Null attempt to kill them.

There will only be a few of these new Null arriving in the first wave, but once the ships arrive, their numbers will increase as well. And the ships themselves are, of course, a danger. In addition to carrying Null troops and dropping them directly on the city, they will track movements within the city. What does this mean for you? Well, once the ships are overhead, anyone who steps outside of a building will be tracked by the Null forces above. This doesn't mean you'll immediately be attacked, but it does mean that sneaking from place to place and launching surprise attacks is essentially impossible, unless you have cloaking abilities of some sort. There are three large ships and seven small ships - nowhere near all of the Null fleet, but enough to keep an eye on you. Of course, just like the Null, with luck and effort they can be destroyed. If you can get up there.

THE OFFICIAL DOOR / [NAME] PLOT WRITE UP;

This is a two to three - four pronged plot dealing with defending the inhabitants of the city and attempting to stop the Null through non-fatal means if at all possible.

THE DOOR PORTION;
Primarily, characters are seeking to make use of the Door's emotional / defensive capabilities which were discovered during studies with Sorrow earlier in this arc. This will ideally be a longer-term defensive solution, essentially creating a protected bunker for non-combatants and the injured. The protective area will affect characters somewhat, though far less intensely than it did during the initial experiments - to quote the mods: "it'd basically be kind of like a donut, in that there would be a moat of crazy to protect and then a moderately less crazy-making center for people to hang out in."

Priorities for characters, beyond tweaking the Door to do this, would be to create a usable bunker which is supplied with medical items, food and drink, and possibly a place or two to sleep? Very dependent on how spacious this bunker can be.

The second part of using the Door is the potential to use its interdimensional capabilities to send the Null away. This would be possible but comes with the drawback of characters being unable to select or control which universe(s) the Null are sent to. This could very well include PCs own universes if selected as an option. There's no guarantee this will send all the Null away, but it should be able to dent forces at the very least.
THE [NAME] PORTION;
Characters have discussed and realised the potential of "infecting" or "innoculating" the Null with / from the Gods' emotional effects. It is possible to use [Name] to upload a virus code to do so through the relay station found on the arctic planet before the city moved. However, this solution is ethically dicey and [Name] is not particularly enthusiastic about the ideas - again, to quote the mods: "[Name] doesn't want to inoculate the other null with emotions, as a forced alteration to their programming is essentially the reason they've been fighting the gods in the first place. [...] if pressed, it will admit that introducing a null virus may be the safest way to end the conflict, even though it has mixed feelings about that." Furthermore, if this option is selected, [Name] will most likely die in the process of uploading the code.
THE DEFENSIVE SHIELD PORTION;
In canon, Lucretia created a spell that can cut off planets from other planes. This would be capable of cutting off the Door's capabilities, though what Lucretia doesn't realise is that the Door's interdimensional powers allow people access to their magic. Essentially, should this be used, it would immediately cut off her magic (as well as anyone else who's powers are from home) and collapse.
And that's about everything! If you're interested in getting involved, please tell me here and leave your plurk username so I can add you to the PP!

I admit I've been absolutely balls about doing any IC tagging regarding this, outside of Law's initial post and some scattered mentions during events. I should have ICly contacted [Name] and I haven't yet but if the mods are cool with handwaving, so am I.

But Law absolutely would have tried to convince [Name] and offered protection, as well as some science and theories even if he can't code for shit and is mostly just the brain here. He's also ethically dicey but he'd be the first to realize, given his studies of the gods, that he can't and won't kill them in order to get the means of creating a vaccine/firewall. So when he realizes the virus is the only way, he'll advocate.

If there is anything I can have Law do ICly, let me know. I don't want to drop the ball so close to endgame, I want to get back into this.

I'll add you to the PP for this! The [Name] stuff is definitely more Alphys' alley so I can't personally help too much, but I can say don't worry about slowness, I think we're all a bit out of it right now. I know I am...

HEYYYY FRIENDOS

So thanks to discussions with a few people (Law, Rey, ect), Alphys has been trying to investigate the feasibility of the Null code and has spoken to [name] about it! We're still kind of threading it but it's over here. She's gonna find out the above information though, and try and move forward with this idea.

HOWEVER... she is very, very worried about this bot, and when push comes to shove she won't let them die. So one of the things she's going to do is tell Hope that [Name] exists, with the hope that if they die during this but they defeat the Null, Hope will restore [Name] back to life. She's also working on the actual feasibility of what she can add to this code from what she knows, but it's mostly going to be [Name] doing a lot of legwork there.

If other people want to get in on this PLEEEEASE let me know, the [Name] plot is one I hold near and dear to my heart and I super wanna see it get resolved well ;O; SAVE THIS BOT
